The Flume water sensor is powered by 4 user-replaceable AA Lithium batteries. In ideal conditions, these batteries can last between 1.5 and 2 years. All of the following are ideal conditions for maximizing battery life:

  • Outdoor meter pits where there is a direct line of sight between the Flume water sensor and the bridge
  • A short distance between the water sensor and the bridge (i.e. less than 500 feet). The shorter the distance, the longer the battery life.
  • Outdoor meter pits with plastic or concrete lids
  • Basement installations

However, in some environments, the battery life can be much shorter. All of the following will reduce battery life:

  • Outdoor meter pits with metal lids
  • Outdoor meter pits that frequently fill with water
  • A long distance between the water sensor and the bridge (i.e. more than 500 feet)
  • Obstacles between the water sensor and the bridge, such as walls that contain rebar and automobiles
